We made it to NOLA!
We arrived in New Orleans, LA on the evening of Monday May 26th. We were able to get everything unloaded into our new “home” for the summer. Tuesday we were given the day to get settled in. We unpacked our things and cleaned up the place a little.
Our new home is a duplex and we are on the top floor apartment. It is a work in progress. Phyllis, the lady who owns the home, had her contractor/electrician run out on the job. So, she has agreed to let us live here for the summer and we (AIM) will be helping her get her home finished. The electrical work has been finished now, and the inspector came and approved everything. But, we are still waiting for the electric company to come turn everything on. So, we are living with temporary power right now. We have enough power to run the A/C along with a couple of lights. When I need to dry my hair, I just unplug a lamp or two. It works out – we are just so blessed to have A/C!!!! We do not have hot water yet, either. It is ok – it just makes showers very quick! J
On Wednesday and Thursday we spent the day meeting all of our ministry partners in the area. I knew that everything was not completely back to normal here – even being 3 years after the storm. But, I had no idea how much still needs to be done! We visited one neighborhood that is only 15% rebuilt. There are houses that haven’t even been touched in 3 years. They were just boarded up and left. The people we have met with are running ministries in many different areas and all are touching their communities in different ways. They are tired and still see so much work left to do. They work 24/7 trying to rebuild their communities. We are excited to get to come along side of these people – to give them teams to push the work forward, to give them a boost, to offer them a rest.
Over the next days and weeks ahead – we hope to share with you more about the ministry opportunities here and the work we are doing!
Please pray for wisdom for us as we decide which ministries to be involved with and when. Also, please pray for the safety of our staff as they all travel in this weekend.
